Bioprospecting, which is a short name for biodiversity prospecting, is scientific and technological research that looks for a useful application, process, or product in nature. In many cases it is a search for useful organic compounds in microorganisms, plants, animals, and fungi that grow in diverse environments including extreme environments such as rainforests, deserts, and hot springs.
