So you thought the ‘indigo’ concept was limited to children? Well, you were wrong. A great number of adults are ‘indigos’ too! What it means is simply that they are people who began their journey as indigo children and are now grown ups, or that they are people who developed ‘indigo’ characteristics in their adult years. Like indigo children, they share a set of characteristics that gives them this distinction. Unlike the children, however, they usually share most or all of twenty-five instead of ten character traits!

Adherents of the New Age movement believe that Indigo people possess special traits and psychic abilities. They have a deep connection with other people as well as with the natural world. They get their name from the indigo colour of their auras. In her book “Understanding Your Life through Colour”, Nancy Ann Tappe, a synesthete and psychic, was the first to point out that greater numbers of children were being born with an indigo aura than ever before. She and many others believe that this phenomenon is an indication of evolutionary change in our species. Most importantly, this is a positive, desirable change. This is because indigo people are thought of as having higher, more evolved consciousnesses, the purpose of which is to bring about a change in the war-ridden, corrupt and ecologically-destructive nature of the present times.

Wendy Chapman claims to be the first to have written about and defined the characteristics of indigo adults. These ‘special’ people share almost all of the twenty-five traits she lists. Among these are their extreme intelligence and memory, deep empathy with people and the natural world, creativity, resistance of authority, and individualism. According to Chapman, they are also emotionally sensitive people, they disdain service-oriented jobs, prefer working independently, have trouble controlling anger, and have a desire to do something to improve the world.

Among their more psychic traits is their ability to mind-read, see angels and ghosts, hear voices, experience out-of-body experiences, and be highly intuitive. They may also be electrically-sensitive -- which means that streetlights and other electrical equipment start malfunctioning when they are nearby!

The energy level of indigo adults is very high, for which reason they are many a time mistaken as suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. They are sexually expressive or repress their sexuality; on the other hand, they may also experiment with their sexuality. Spirituality, religion, self-help books, etc.- indigo adults try to find meaning in life through these channels.

It is thought today that up to 25% of people in the 20-30 age bracket are indigos, followed by up to 15% in the 30-40 age group, 5-10% of the 40-50 year-olds, and hardly 0.5% of those older.

With no evidence to corroborate their claims, proponents of the indigo concept are being viewed with skepticism by those in the scientific community. Scientists have questioned the concept on medical and sociological grounds. There are many who believe that indigo adults are merely suffering from a medical condition such as Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder or other behavioral, anti-social problems. A valid criticism of the concept is that by labeling oneself or a peer an ‘indigo’, one is in effect blocking him or her from having treatment that would actually help improve the quality of their life.

Others junk the claim that indigo adults are evidence of evolutionary progress. After all, they may actually merely be living examples of the various social changes today’s world is undergoing. Hence the lack of concentration, emotional sensitivity, experimentation with sexuality, etc. may actually be manifestations of these changes.

In the end, it is up to an individual to decide on the legitimacy of the indigo concept. If you do believe you are an indigo adult, you will find a large number of people the world over who share your character traits. And the world has an optimistic future to look forward to, thanks to indigo people!
