Home remedies for Jaundice
Jaundice is not a disease but rather a sign that can occur in many different diseases. Jaundice is the yellowish staining of the skin and the whites of the eyes, caused by high levels in blood of the bile pigment Bilirubin. The color of the skin and eyes varies, depending on the level of Bilirubin.
What are the symptoms often accompanying jaundice?
- Yellow discolouring of the skin, whites of the eyes (sclera), and mucus membranes
- Dark urine
- Light-colored stool (gray or yellow)
- Abdominal pain or swelling
- Tender enlarged liver.
 Conventional Treatment
Since Jaundice is a symptom and not a disease, treatment for it depends on its cause. In case of viral jaundice, doctors actually ask patients to just be patient and wait for the infection to run its course. That is why home remedies work well to alleviate symptoms of jaundice.
 Home Remedies
- Soak equal quantities of tamarind pulp and sugar candy (mishri in Hindi) in hot water in an earthen pot overnight. Next morning, strain the concoction and give it to the patient thrice a day.
- Boil about 10-15 lemon or lime leaves in half a litre of water. Cool the liquid and give it to the patient thrice a day.
- A lot of people recommend having sugarcane juice during Jaundice. However, ensure that the juice is extracted under strict hygienic conditions. Alternately, you can wash the per-cut chunks of sugar-cane available in the market in hot water, and let it cool in the fridge. Once it cools down, the patient can chew on them.
- Grate some radish and squeeze the juice. The patient can have a table spoon of the juice three times a day. You can add some sugar or glucose to it to reduce the sourness. You can also extract the juice of the green leaves of radish by pounding them, and give the juice to the patient.
- A glass of fresh tomato juice when taken with a pinch of salt and pepper on an empty stomach is beneficial. Carrot juice can also be taken in a similar fashion.
- Take a tablespoon of beetroot juice with a few drops of lemon thrice a day.
- Keep the patient on a liquid diet such as juices and soups for the first week, till the worst symptoms are over. For the next week or so, give him fresh fruits. Raw vegetable salad (carrot, radish, cucumber, beetroot and tomato) is also a good option. During the recovery period, the patient should be kept on a light, non-spicy and non-fat diet. Green leafy vegetables, legumes and pulses should, however, be avoided for the first 2-3 weeks, as these tend to ferment and putrefy in the lower intestines.
- Take complete rest and follow the doctor’s instructions closely to avoid chances of relapse.
