Merlot is the most planted red grape variety. Along with being extremely popular for its fruity medium body, its lower tannin count and higher sugar level give it a more flexibility, enabling wine makers to utilize in blending of wines more than varieties such as the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Merlot has a somewhat thin skin and is prone to rot and frost.

Merlot is the wine drinkers’ wine, due to it subtleness of tannin and forward fruity flavours it is a good wine for beginners in wine to start with.
