Reiki
From CopperWiki
Reiki is an alternate medical therapy. It is a Japanese technique that promotes relaxation and healing. Derived from the words ‘Rei’ meaning “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and ‘Ki’ which is “life force energy”, ‘Reiki’ is actually a “spiritually guided life force energy.”

[edit] Why should I be aware of this?
Largely non-invasive and therefore painless, Reiki has made inroads into the specialized world of medical science and research, and is even used in the treatment of maladies like cancer. Moreover, it also alleviates the side effects associated with more commonplace medical treatments. Alone or in consonance with other methods, reiki has been reported to have relieved physical and mental distress in millions.
Based on the theology that human being lives on due to certain life forces flowing through the physical body, reiki premises itself on the ground that these life forces flow through pathways called charkas, meridians and nadis. This life force is also present around the person, somewhat like an aura to produce a field of energy. It is the combination of these two forces, within and outside of the individual that nourishes and even sustains the vitality, strength and vigour of the individual. Reiki practitioners are of the opinion that when this life force is reduced, the organs and cells get affected thereby affecting the vital functions of the human system. It is then when a person is pronounced ‘Sick’.
[edit] How does this affect me?
For our system to be in a state of well being it is of absolute importance that the life forces, within and outside the body are in consonance and harmony. Any abatement in one, may directly or indirectly affect the smooth functioning of the other.
It has been reported by persons who have benefited from this treatment that the entire experience is akin to going to a spa wherein the individual feels a state of deep relaxation accompanied by a sense of well being. By simply gathering of these life forces, revitalizing the positive ones and discarding the negative ones, reiki masters are known to achieve results that are astounding. It is owing to the fact that the entire method is steeped in spirituality, and is a multidimensional energy healing system which can heal the cause of a problem at whatever level it may exist - body, spirit or mind –is what makes Reiki a much sought after method of treatment.
[edit] All about Reiki
The credit to discovering this unique process of healing is ascribed to Japanese, Dr. Mikao Usui, in the early 20th century. He was immensely intrigued by the power of spiritual healers as Jesus Christ, Buddha and others, who were able to miraculously alleviate physical and mental maladies by mere touch, and without depleting their own energy resources. Dr. Mikao devoted almost 20 years to his study in the quest of which he experienced a unique energy gratification, which he understood to have considerable healing powers. He named this energy - Usui Reiki Ryoho. After World War II, this method of treatment was popularised by the disciples of Dr. Mikao.
[edit] How does Reiki work?
Reiki is usually administered to the individual in solitude by a method called “laying on hands”. With the aim to recharge the positive life force /energy around the person, the reiki master strives to raise the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break apart and fall away. In so doing, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, thus allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.
Apart from influencing the vital functioning of the physical system, this life force is also responsive to complexities of the human mind namely thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings impact the overall energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of the life force. Once again this lowered mental state has an impact on the well being of the physical state.
[edit] Whole body treatment
A number of treatments are available under this holistic healing method namely whole body treatment wherein the practitioner asks the recipient to lie down, usually on a massage table, and relax. The treatment proceeds with the practitioner placing his hands on the recipient in various positions. Some even use a no touch technique where the practioners hand is held a few centimetres away. The other methods are ‘localised treatment’ where a singular body part is treated. This is more commonplace in case of localised injuries. Other methods of treatment are dessiminated through informal groups, usually during social interactions as also in groups where the maladies or symptoms may be the same. Self treatment is also possible under this approach.
[edit] Criticisms
However, as with most other treatments of this kind Reiki truly do not have scientific evidences, nor is it steeped into scientific rigours. The foremost concern is that this form of treatment exploits the hope and faith of the person undergoing treatment while only offering a placebo effect.
Yet another concern is to do with the efficacy of the treatment. Being largely invasive, patients are at times favourably inclined towards this method so as to avoid clinically proven methods of treatment which otherwise are harsh on the body, but nonetheless have proven to be beneficial. However, to their credit, most reiki practitioners of repute do encourage their clients to consult a medical practitioner in case of serious conditions and use reiki in consonance with the more conventional methods.

- As a concept reiki is not totally new to India. This method of healing did occupy its place in the ancient system of medicine. The concept of a universal force, both within and outside the human body has been expounded in the Bhagvad Gita.
- Gurus like Sai Baba, Ramkrishna Paramhans, Adi Shankaracharya and the likes did resort to spiritual healing where positive energies were transferred to the ailing person. However it is only lately that this method got a certain amount of grounding and recognition though the efforts of the Japanese grandmasters.
- The method, though resting on the premise of a universal life force, often utilizes every conceivable tool like crystals, cards, etc to revive the dormant positive life forces within the individual. In this huge ability to appreciate and imbibe various forms of symptom alleviation lies the success story of Reiki.
- Reiki is believed to have begun in Tibet several thousand years ago. Dr. Mikao Usui, is credited with rediscovering the root system in late 1800s. [1]
