Merits, demerits apart, the success of Red Bull is one of the greatest among globally recognized brands, in a little more than 20 years. The brand was quick to take advantage of a pressing need in the market – widespread energy deficit. The relative ease with which the brand can replenish lost energy with stimulants such as caffeine, guarana, is an almost god-send benefit.
According to a report by The 10 Key Factors for Success in Energy Drinks - Europe and the US, published by The Centre for Food & Health Studies, the reasons for success of the brand can be attributed to the following factors:
• benefit that the consumer can feel • Focus on one benefit • Focus on one brand • Lifestyle marketing • Packaging innovation • Innovation in distribution • Premium pricing • Internationalization • Asian innovation The energy drink sector has continued to be a success in spite of it being dismissed as a fad, even by major drink companies like Coke and Pepsi.
On a lighter note, I know a 15 yr old boy who, when he discovered that the love of his life was seeing someone else, went on a Red Bull binge. He wanted to numb the pain, but ended up staying up all night!
