[edit] Reading the expiry dates on maekup boxes is a must

I opened my grandmom's dressing table the other day and nearly passed out with fright, she had makeup, ie lipsticks and rouge dating back to 1946. When i insisted that it was really high time we all parted company with the makeup she was quite irate and told me quite categorically that her makeup was very very expensive and she wasnt about to listen to spendthrift like me and throw it all away. Her point being there's so much of it left why should i waste it. That made me quickly do a net search for what happens to makeup when it has gone past it's expiry date.

A lot of the stuff that we buy is pretty expensive, so i suppose its a very natural tendency to use the same product till it lasts without actually considering "i'm now dead on such and such date". A lot of these dont have expiry dates on them so according to docs go by when you first opened the product. Old makeup could lead to serious health problems.

  • Eye make ups and liquid foundations last for about 3 months.
  • Powders and foundations that have been left open for a year or so should be avoided.
  • Once these make up products are opened the preservatives slowly degenerate and this leads to the formation of bacteria which causes infection.
  • Make up applicators like sponges should be replaced at least once a week.
  • Lipsticks, lip glosses and lip balms should never be shared as this could lead to viruses being passed from one person to the other.
  • Unusual smell coming out of any make up product means that it has gone bad.
  • Use of old makeup can cause peri-oral dermatitis, which leads to little red skin eruptions that resemble acne.
  • The herpes virus can be passed through lipsticks and lip balms.

be kind to yourself and go get a change. You deserve it.
