What is more scary than the fact that wheat stockpiles are at a 30-year low and production costs are rising? Wheat growers are more scared about the specter of Ug99, a new rust fungus to which very few of the currently grown varieties of wheat are resistant.

Ug99 emerged in Uganda and has already spread to Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Yemen, and Iran. A team of scientists at the USDA Agricultural Research Service are researching on ways to combat this proble.

Longer they take, greater the risk of the current food crisis worsening.
