Acupressure is an alternative therapy that is based on the principle that all illness or disease take place because of impaired flow of natural energy in the body. This ancient Chinese technique, based on the principles of acupuncture, involves the use of finger pressure (instead of needles) on specific points along the body.

Why should I be aware of this?

  • With acupressure the body's own recuperative powers are stimulated.
  • Acupressure is the non-invasive form of acupuncture. The goal with Acupressure is to learn the points that will produce the Healing Response for the conditions we want to fix.
  • Toxin accumulation causes stiffness throughout the body, which, in turn, puts abnormal pressure on nerves, and blood and lymph vessels. The pressure on blood and lymph vessels affect both skeletal systems and internal organ functioning. The stimulation removes energy blockages by diffusing the toxic build up that accumulates in the muscle tissue.

Acupressure and health

Practiced using only one tool, the thumb, Acupressure proponents claim it can cure everything from hair loss and headaches to more serius diseases like spondylosis and arthritis. Other diseases and conditions that Acupressure seems to have cured or mitigated are metabolic disorders, body deformity, inflammation of body tissues, digestion related problems, heart problems and problems with nervous system, to name a few.

All about acupressure

Chinese medicine has developed acupuncture, acupressure, herbal remedies, diet, exercise, lifestyle changes, and other remedies as part of its healing methods. Nearly all of the forms of Oriental medicine that are used in the West today, including acupuncture, acupressure, shiatsu, and Chinese herbal medicine, have their roots in Chinese medicine.

The body and all matter is made up of electro-magnetic forces.Acupuncture is based on the theory that there is an invisible force or energy in nature that the Chinese call qi. In a manner similar to blood circulation, qi flows to each cell via a complex network of pathways usually called `channels` or`meridians`. If qi gets stuck, it causes an imbalance as upstream cells are flooded with too much qi and downstream cells receive too little.

Acupuncture points are those spots where qi has the greatest tendency to get stuck; hence stimulating them with needles (acupuncture) or finger pressure (acupressure) helps free stuck qi and restore normal circulation. Once normal qi circulation is restored, the cells eventually return to their normal, healthy state.

  • The method of applying acupressure is almost similar to traditional massage. * Finger or thumb is used to massage points on the body.
  • Sometimes a blunt object is used in a fairly rapid circular motion with a medium pressure.
  • Massages last between 5 and 15 minutes.
  • Some of the most common acupressure techniques are: Rubbing, Kneading, Percussion and Vibration. Fingers, hands, elbows, knees and feet are often used to massage other parts of the body.
  • Acupressure can be performed sitting, standing or lying down.

Acupressure massage is effective both as prevention and as a treatment for many health conditions, including headaches, general aches and pains, colds and flu, arthritis, allergies, asthma, nervous tension, menstrual cramps, sinus problems, sprains, Tennis Elbow, and toothaches, among others. Acupressure can be performed even by a layperson as the techniques are fairly easy to learn, and have been used to provide quick, cost-free, and effective relief from many symptoms. Acupressure points can also be stimulated to increase energy and feelings of well-being, reduce stress, stimulate the immune system, and alleviate sexual dysfunction.

  • Actually the term “pressure” in acupressure is misleading. The massage involves very light touch. [1]
  • It's the location of the contact that's important, not the amount of pressure. [1]
  • An acupressure session typically begins with Tui Na. This initial massage prepares the body to receive the work with specific points, increasing the effectiveness of the work.
