Amino Acids are the chemical units that help build-up of proteins in the body.. Our body needs protein to build the muscles, tendons, organs, glands, nails, and hair. Growth, repair and maintenance of all cells are dependent upon them. Protein constitutes the greatest portion of our body weight after water.
Amino Acids The human body requires approximately 20 amino acids. Amino acids are classified as nonessential amino acids and essential amino acids. The body can make 13 amino acids on its own i.e., it does not need to get them from the diet. These are known as nonessential amino acids. There are 9 amino acids that the body can obtain only from food, these are known as essential amino acids. Food containing protein is broken down during digestion into constituent amino acids which are used by the body for growth, repair and energy.
Amino acids are of two kinds:
- Essential amino acids which cannot be produced by the body.
- Non essential amino acids that can be manufactured by the body itself.
