All about ancient superfoods
Though it has not been conclusively proved that those plants that have existed the longest have the most nutritional benefit, it is clear that the “green superfoods” — among them spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass and barley grass — are some of the easiest and best sources for nutrition available. Some variation of these ancient seaweeds and grasses can be found all over the world, and their use as a source of concentrated nutrition is one of the most ancient plant/human relationships on Earth.
Forebears of life on Earth
Spirulina, a type of blue-green algae native to South American and African alkaline lakes, has been the subject of many scientific studies. Spirulina, one of the forebears of life on Earth, and other blue-green algaes, helped produce all the oxygen in the atmosphere.
Algaes, which are more than 35 billion years old, were the first form of photosynthetic life. Spirulina and its cousins often are referred to as “whole foods” or “green superfoods” because they contain a complete nutritional profile.
A few million years later
A few million years later came the terrestrial green superfoods, most notably wheatgrass and barley grass. These two are the best-known of the cereal grain grasses, which also include rye grass, oat grass, all nutritional powerhouses, delivering compact, dense nutrition in relatively small servings. For example, 15 pounds of wheatgrass contains roughly the equivalent nutrients of 350 pounds of fruits and vegetables. And dried barley grass (often marketed as Green Magma) contains 11 times the calcium of cow’s milk, five times the iron of spinach and seven times the vitamin C of oranges.
Chia seeds were domesticated by ancient Mexicans in 2,600 B.C, and for centuries were used as a staple food by the Indians of the Southwest (US) and Mexico. These seeds were known as the "running food". The Aztec warriors were said to have subsisted on the Chia seed and water during the conquests. Ancient documents shows that in Mayan times there were four important crops: corn, beans, chia, and amaranth, which comprised the main components of the Aztec and Mayan diets when Columbus arrived in the New World.
The Spaniards banned growing Chia plants after conquering Mexico because they played a role in pagan religious ceremonies. Tribute and taxes to the Aztec priesthood and nobility were often paid in chia seeds.
