Indigo Children
Indigo Children are thought to be a ‘new’ and special generation of children; an example of evolution occurring right before our eyes; the reason to be optimistic about the future of the earth and its citizens. They are the Indigo children, so called because of the indigo colour of their auras and special abilities and characteristics that set them apart from their peers and those who have come before them. A common term within the context of the New Age movement, this term was first used by Nancy Ann Tappe and later popularized by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober.

Defining Characteristics of Indigo Children
Does your child have atypically large and clear eyes, and is extremely intelligent and gifted? Well, he or she might just be an indigo! Indigo children share a set of distinct characteristics that set them apart in a crowd. Tober and Carroll list ten traits that indigo children show. A point to note here is that only a child who has most or all of these traits is an indigo; children who show only some of these traits may not actually be the ‘special’ kids of the new millennium!
Tober and Carroll’s list begins by noting that indigo children have a strong sense of self-worth -- they are born with the feeling that they are royal and deserving of their place on earth. They act so too, and feel surprised when others do not share their point of view. They abhor absolute, unquestionable authority. As creative, intelligent people/authoritative figures, systems and rituals only bind and frustrate them. They may have a better way of doing something than the one prescribed; hence, they may seem non-conforming and rebellious to many. In other cases, they will simply not obey the ‘rules’.
Indigo children usually feel lost in social situations, especially if they are not with other indigos. More often than not, school is a difficult place for them- not for the studies, but for the social environment, in which they feel out of place. Lastly, they neither give in to what Tober and Caroll call “guilt discipline” nor are they shy about voicing their needs.
Hence, it becomes apparent that these New Age kids are highly individualistic, energetic, non-conforming and confident. The question that comes to mind then is – is there a special reason for their presence on earth?
Why Are They Here?
It is generally acknowledged within the New Age movement that indigo children are “evolved consciousnesses” (2), here on earth for a very special reason- to make it a better place to live in. For Tappe, they are the answer to our present-day troubles of war, conflict, inequality, corruption and environmental-degradation. They have come here “to help change the vibrations of our lives and create one land, one globe and one species.” (3) Their energy channels are aligned towards creating a better, positive future.
When Your Child is an Indigo…
If you can identify your child as an indigo child, you need to be aware of certain things. First and foremost, do not treat him or her any differently from ‘other’ kids. Encourage them, be there for them, but do not let them think they are superior or better than others in any way. Second, his or her energy patterns may be seen by some as symptomatic of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, but as a parent of an indigo, you are encouraged to see this as a positive rather than a negative trait. They may not need medical help but only your support.
What Skeptics Have To Say
Is the concept of ‘indigo children’ pseudoscience? In the absence of any substantial evidence, there are many among the scientific as well as the non-scientific community who believe so. They are of the view that more and more children who are being labeled as indigos may actually be showing signs of ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, and other behavioral problems which need medical attention. By calling them ‘special’ and ‘gifted’, parents and educators are merely trying to evade the real medical reasons for their children’s behaviour and are actually delaying potentially helpful treatment. On the other hand, instead of being ‘special’, these children could merely be selfish, antisocial and arrogant.
Skeptical sociologists attribute the characteristics of indigo children to be a result of their upbringing. After all, they imply, New Age parents rear children who will be similar to them in thought and action. Moreover, these children could merely be indicators of a new social phenomenon rather than an example of evolution in progress.
At the end, it remains up to you to believe in the concept or treat it with indifference. You may attribute it to evolution or to social change, or deny its existence altogether. Perhaps one can only say that children of today are different from those of yore, and leave it at that until clinching evidence is found!
