How does one tell a fake Chanderi from a genuine one? Do the genuine Chanderi's carry some distinguishing trademark? Is somebody doing anything to protect the genuine Chanderi's from the fake ones?
You have rightly mentioned that the profit margins of the weavers are eroded by the presence of traders. Another unfortunate development is the dwindling patronage they nowadays receive. Without adequate patronage, most of these weavers are unable to change with times. Till Independence the royal families of Gwalior provided the required patronage. Later the State and Central Governments supported them by buying their products and providing subsidies. Now that too has dwindled to the minimum.
I have also read reports that fearing the future many resourceful master weavers have started investing in alternative business so that they can switch at the right moment. Ten years hence where will this 'symbol of heritage' be?
