German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (22 February 1788 - 21 September 1860) said: "All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident".

A similar statement is often attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, who - along similar lines is thought to have said: "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win".

On a practical and more recent level, spiritual teacher Barry Long said: "No truth is the truth until it is lived".
